Preparation Tips for Commence RM(d) Service Pack Release

1. Obtain Your Commence Registration Information

Please have the following information available as it will be required to direct you to the appropriate Service Pack for your version of Commence.

  • Commence RM Version
  • Commence Serial Number
  • Server Authorization Key (for workgroups)
Finding the Version and Serial Number

From the Commence menu, select Help -> About and note the following:

Server Authorization Key

For Commence Workgroup, the server authorization is a seven character key provided at the time of purchase and authorizes the number of users for your workgroup. An example server authorization key looks like "ABCDEFG".

If you are unable to locate this information, please contact your Commence Reseller, Distributor or Commence Sales.

2. Create Database Backups

From the Commence menu, select File -> Open/Manage Database -> Backup.    This will create a backup file of type .XFR of the currently selected database.    Repeat for the server database and each client workstation.

3. Continue to review the Commence web site for updated information

We will be continuing to update the Commence.com web site with additional information to help our customers with the service pack installation. For additional information about how to resume syncing, please review the related knowledgebase article Q11099 - INFO: What to expect after applying the RM(d)service pack.

patch works very well. the link for trouble shooting tips....which is given along with the patch, is broken. http://mail.commence.com/commencelogin/ some means of tagging the "bad" (created since 20 march 06) would be helpful. Currently users success will depend on their own created date/time keys and other fields. Commence comment: Tagging items added after a certain date is not necessary. These items are automaticaly detected and handled by the resynchronization tool which will be available shortly. Approved: Tuesday, March 28, 2006
There is no information regarding additional steps that me be necessary to resume syncing. Commence comment: Thank you for your feedback; the article will be updated with links to related articles. Approved: Monday, March 27, 2006
Will there be any problems if we dont install it on the entire workgroup or can we do it on one computer at first to make sure everything works? Commence comment: The RM(d) service pack must be installed at the server first then on at least one client to verify everything works. Unpatched clients will go into error mode when they try to sync with the server. This safeguard is designed to store their updates safely until the service pack is applied. The error condition will clear automatically after they install the update. Approved: Monday, March 27, 2006
It is Monday, now after 11am in New Jersey. Where is the update? Where is the information on what to do next? Or where is the message saying "We are working as fast as we can, but for quality purposes, the SP wont be ready until ____" Commence comment: The Customer Advisory page (accessible from the Commence home page) is the best place to check for the latest updates and time frames from Commence Corporation. Approved: Monday, March 27, 2006
Instead of having two service calls for our network consultants, we would like only one. So when can we schedule them to do the work noted above as well as install the "service pack"? Commence comment: The RM(d) SP1 update will be released shortly. The service call should be scheduled immediately after this release. Time frames are being posted via the Commence web site under the customer advisory section. Approved: Monday, March 27, 2006
I would like a link here to the service pack. That would be logical. Thx! Commence comment: A shortcut has been added to the External Links section for this article. Approved: Monday, March 27, 2006
what good is a backup, which is not immediately followed by patch. your instructions allow items to be added between backup and patch. so what is the purpose of not all-inclusive backup? Commence comment: The SP applies to program files only. There is no data conversion so the database backup is simply routine procedure. Any shared items added in the interim (from March 20 to the time RM(d) is installed) will be detected and handled by the resynchronization utility which will be available shortly.
