Q11107 - INFO: Commence RM(d) SP1 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Summary
Please refer to this CommenceKB article for frequently asked questions regarding the RM(d) SP1 service pack and the accompanying Workgroup Data Resynchronization utility. We will be updating this FAQ periodically as needed.

More Information

Q: How do I know if I need the SP1 version?
A: Every user running the following Commence versions needs to install the RM(d) SP1 service pack, even if you have previously installed other service packs: Designer Edition RM 3.1, RM 3.0, RM 2.1 and all the CRM Application Suite Versions.

Q: How can I tell if I already have it installed?
A: See the related CommenceKB article Q11094 - INFO: Verifying the RM(d) SP1 service pack is installed properly.

Q: Should I install the RM(d) service pack first?
A: The RM(d) service pack was an interim solution to restart the synchronization process. The RM(d) SP1 service pack is all-inclusive and does not require you to install RM(d) first.

Q: Where is the Workgroup Data Resynchronization utility?
A: The Workgroup Data Resynchronization utility is included in the installer. This utility will run once automatically after installing the RM(d) SP1 service pack. It can be run again later as needed using the start menu shortcut or by double-clicking the WGResync.exe file in the Commence program folder.

Q: Why is there a new SP1 version of Commence EXE
A: The workgroup data resynchronization utility requires the RM(d) SP1 version of commence.exe (v.95) for the tool to work properly.

Q: I have already downloaded (RM31ALL.EXE or RM30ALL.EXE or RM21ALL.EXE), do I need to download again?
A: We continue to use a consistent filenaming scheme for the Commence service pack installers. See the chart below.

  • RM 3.1 users need RM31ALL.EXE
  • RM 3.0 users need RM30ALL.EXE
  • RM 2.1 users need RM21ALL.EXE
  • CRM 2.1 users need CRM21ALL.EXE

Since the service pack installers use the same filename, some customers have reported getting a prompt when downloading the new file, asking if they want to replace the existing file. The correct answer is yes, replace the file. The latest service pack installers include all past changes plus the latest updates.

Q: How does the Workgroup data resynchronization utility work?
A: The workgroup data resynchronization utility finds all items (local and shared) with a negative recordID (a.k.a, thid). Items that were created by the current database are identified using the database workgroup ID which is embedded in the thid. These are the items that need to be resynchronized. The utility recreates the item as shared and deletes the original item.

Q: Is there any harm in running the Workgroup data resynchronization utility multiple times?
A: The Workgroup data resynchronization utility can be run in scan-only mode as many times as needed. Running in scan and update mode multiple times will reprocess the same items. Although this is harmless it creates unecessary workgroup sync data/activity.

Q: How do I use the Workgroup Data Resynchronization utility with multiple databases?
A: Follow the steps below.

  1. Close all instances of commence.
  2. Apply the /NOAGENTS /NOSYNC /PROMPT command line options to your Commence shortcut.
  3. Run commence from this shortcut and select the proper database.
  4. Run the Workgroup data resynchronization utility using the start menu shortcut or by double-clicking the WGResync.exe file in the Commence program folder.
  5. Press YES to confirm your options and let the tool run.
  6. Close commence.
  7. Repeat steps 3-6 for each database to be processed.

Note: be sure to remove the command line options: /NOAGENTS /NOSYNC from the shortcut, otherwise agents and syncing will be disabled.

Q: Why do I get an automation error on using the Workgroup Data Resynchronization tool?
A: An automation error may occur if the utility is unable to access the data record.  This may occur if the current database permissions do not allow deletions.  See the related CommenceKB article Q11105 - HOWTO: Prepare to use the Data Resynchronization utility

Q: At the end of the RM(d) SP1 service pack installation I chose the option to automatically run the data synchronization utility. But then I was prompted to run a another copy of Commence. Shouldn't the utility run Commence automatically?
A: That's right, the Workgroup Data Resynchronization utility takes care of running Commence once with all the appropriate command line options. You should say No if prompted to run Commence a second time.
