Summary
The backup created by Commence is a compressed file containing all the files and folders needed to recreate your database. To restore a database, create the new folder by adding a database in Commence. Then use the restore command to uncompresses the backup file into the new folder. This rebuilds your database with all of the data as of the date the backup was made.
More Information
The restore steps below can be used to rebuild a lost database (e.g. recover from hard drive crash) and also to move any Commence database to a new installation of Commence (e.g. new hardware).
Note these steps are for moving a client database or a standalone database that is not part of a workgroup. Additional steps are needed to move a Commence server.
PART I: Add a new database to your Commence installation
1. Select File-Open/Manage Database.
2. Select the Add button.
3. Enter the Name of the database you wish to add. The name is limited to 50 characters.
4. Enter the path to the database. The path can be an existing Commence database that is no longer referenced, an existing directory, or a directory that does not exist yet.
5. Select Save. If the directory does not exist, Commence will ask you if you want to create it.
PART II: Restore
(Open a database other than the one you want to restore to. You cannot restore to the open database.)
1. Select File-Open/Manage Database.
2. Highlight the database you wish to restore to. If you want to restore to a new database, you will need to create it by selecting the Add button.
3. Select the Restore button.
4. If the highlighted database is already populated, a restore will totally delete all files in that directory. This cannot be reversed. Select Yes if this is what you want to do, otherwise, select No and then select a different database to restore to or add a new one.
5. Select the path and the filename of the file you wish to restore. The default extension is .XFR.
6. Select Open.
7. If the database is being restored from diskette and it occupies more than one, you will be prompted when to insert the next diskette.
