Q10171 - HOWTO: Move an active client database from one PC to another

Summary
The article below discusses how to move an active client in the workgroup to a new PC without re-enrolling the user.  It is as simple as using the Backup/Restore tool.

Commence client backup files (*.XFR) retain all workgroup information including category permissions, workgroup ID, and communication parameters.  This simplifies the task of moving a client database.

More Information
Steps for moving a Commence client database from one PC to another.

On the Existing Commence client:

  1. Open Commence with the client database active.
  2. Select Customize -> Workgroup, then click OK. Set Workgroup Communications interval to 0. This will turn off automatic synchronization.
  3. Select File -> Open/Manage database -> Edit.   Make note of the Database Name and Path.   You may want to keep this convention for the new client database.  Append the word 'OLD' to the name of the database and click Save.
  4. In the same dialog box click the Backup button.    Commence will prompt you for a location and name for the resulting XFR file.  Click Save and when the backup completes click OK.
  5. Close Commence.

On the new PC:

    1. Install Commence and open to the default database.
    2. Select File -> Open/Manage Database -> Add.  Provide a name for the database and a new empty directory for the database path.  If desired, use the same name and path location as in Step 2 above.   Commence will create a new directory if the given name does not exist.
    3. When the new database appears in the Open/Manage Database window, select it and click Restore
    4. Open the database. Set Workgroup Communications interval to desired value. This will re-enable automatic synchronization with the server.

Note: Remember to delete the database from the old PC.  Once a client database is migrated, it should no longer be opened on the old PC.
