Summary
How to move a Commence RM server database from one PC to another without re-enrolling all the clients?

More Information
Steps for moving a Commence RM 3.0/RM 3.1 server database and related files to a new PC.

Step 1: Run Setup on the new PC

Using the Commence RM 3.1 CD, run setup of the Commence RM Workgroup on the new PC. Enter your serial number when prompted. Run the License program (if it does not run automatically). Enter your license upgrade key.

Run ComAdmin then immediately exit ComAdmin.

Using Windows Explorer, open the Commence RM program directory on the new PC. (Use Help - System Information to find this folder.) Rename the WGFiles7 folder to WGFiles.old

Step 2: Backup the WGFiles and move this to new PC

Locate the Commence RM program directory on the old PC. Copy the WGFiles7 folder from the old PC. Copy this folder to the Commence RM program directory on the new PC.

Step 3: Confirm the WGFiles move was successful

Start Comadmin, select Users. Verify your users list is correct. Exit from ComAdmin.

Step 4: Backup the Server Database and move this to new PC

Create a backup of the server database on the old PC. Under the Commence Application button, choose Open/Manage Database -> Backup.   When the backup is complete, copy this compressed file to the new PC and place it in the Application Data Directory. (Use Help - System Information to find this folder.)

Close the old Commence server database so that it does not sync with any more users.

Step 5: Restore your Server on the new PC

Run the Commence Server; this will open the default database. You will need to add a new database folder to finish moving your server. Under the Commence Application button, choose Open/Manage Database -> Add.  Enter a database name for your server. Click the Select button and create a new folder for your server database. This new folder will be created under the Application Data Directory. Save the new database

The newly added database will be highlighted in the list of databases. Click the Restore button. Go up a level in the browse window to find and select the backup file of your server database.

With the restore complete, open the database and use the Customize -> Workgroup command.

    • Verify your user names appear in the Permission screens
    • Verify the server communications parameters are still valid for the new environment. If you need to update these settings continue with the steps below to change the path to the shared LAN directory.

Setting up a new Shared LAN directory

  1. Select Customize - Workgroup. Click Next until you get to the Communications screen. Press the Configure button at the top of the screen to verify the server communications.
  2. Highlight shared LAN directory and click Edit to change the path.
  3. Enter the path to a brand new empty folder on the new PC. Note this folder must be fully accessible to the clients with Read, Write, Create, Delete, and Modify rights.
  4. Do NOT copy over any of the old files from the previous shared LAN directory. These files will be recreated once each client is redirected to use the new folder.
